General English

This course has a communicative focus, and develops Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening skills. The course is 25 hours per week and students are able to begin any Monday for any duration.

The nationality mix means that English usage in classes and in the college is very real. Students spend a good deal of time focussing on Speaking and Listening skills that they can put to good use immediately, and during their time in Australia.

This is an intensive preparatory course for students who want to go to an English speaking university, Technical and Further Education institution (TAFE), or business college. Students participate in listening, reading, writing and speaking tasks, all with an academic focus. IELTS exam preparation is included in this course. Business English

This ten week course will cover a range of business related topics such as Retailing, Marketing, Careers, Trade and Communications. Over each week of the course, one of the main topics will be covered through a variety of listening texts and readings adapted from authentic sources such as the Financial Times. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in business communication role plays such as meetings, negotiations, interviews and telephone conversations as well as improve the various written communicative skills essential in the workplace with a specific writing task each week, for example a CV, report, memo or letter.

Students will also be expected to take part in formal presentations and to use their newly acquired business vocabulary and related communication skills to analyse particular case studies. While business is the intended focus of this course, different grammar points and exam skills will also be studied each week in order to prepare the students not only for the TOEIC exam but also to communicate effectively in a English speaking business environment.

Cambridge Preparation Program

These courses provide a wonderful challenge for Upper Intermediate students and above. Content is adhered to through the use of specified texts over a 12 week period. Upon completion, students sit 5 papers: Reading, Writing, English in Use, Listening and Speaking. These examinations have been designed by Cambridge University as a means of testing English proficiency. Results of these programs are recognised in many countries.

Students who pass this course are rewarded with a certificate that they can use to access higher education or broaden their employment opportunities.

    • FCE (First Certificate in English) — Every year, approximately a quarter of a million people in over 100 countries sit for this Upper Intermediate exam. At this level learners can expect to be able to work and study in an English speaking environment and cope easily as a tourist in an English speaking country, students may experience some difficulty coping with unfamiliar situations and technical language.
    • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) — This is an Advanced level examination for learners of English. It is taken by around fifty thousand people every year, in more than sixty countries. At this level learners can expect to cope confidently in most situations that would arise in an English speaking country — socially, professionally and in higher education.

Pre FCE

Students join a closed class, studying structured and focused course content over a 12 week period. Students will develop a better understanding of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing to the extent required to enter a Cambridge course or continue to further study.

Students will be required to sit an end of course exam and to be graded accordingly. GEOS certificates will then be issued upon successful completion of this task.

This course is run 4 times each year, with specific intakes in January, March, June and September.
