On Thursday 3rd April, GEOS Melbourne hosted a party for all students and staff at the Bond Lounge. It was a great way for students and staff to mix and with over 400 people it was a great success. Drew, one of our teachers at GEOS Melbourne and his band played for us along with two other teachers Greg and Lewis. It was a great night and we definitely plan to host another party later this year. Testimonials

Francesca Ragnedda from Italy
Why did you choose Melbourne?
I heard about Melbourne through my cousin, who got married to an Australian last year. I was very curious to visit Melbourne, so I decided to visit on a working Holiday Visa to see if I liked it first. I loved Melbourne and decided to come back to study here. I started at GEOS Melbourne in April 07. I started with General English and I am now studying in Advanced English for Further studies and enjoy it very much.
What do you like about GEOS?
I find the teachers very helpful, they are always available to assist. I never felt lost here because from the first day, the GEOS staff made me feel comfortable.
What are your planes for the future?
I would like to do an Advanced Diploma in Marketing here in Melbourne. This week, I am going to look around different Universities.
Were you nervous about coming to Australia?
I was a little nervous, but once I arrived I felt much more relaxed. Australia is a very organised country and there are a lot of opportunities here for students.
Was it difficult to find work?
No if you want to work, you can definitely find work. You just have to be motivated and look for it and you will find it.
What do you do in your free time?
I go out with my friends, some of them are from GEOS. I think Australians are very friendly. Some people told me that they are unsociable but I don’t think it is true. They are wonderful people.
What would you recommend to visit in Melbourne?
The Botanical gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance – the view is amazing. Melbourne is so alive, there are always cultural events happening, it’s just full of life. I also find it very safe compared to other big European cities. I read in a magazine that it is one of the top 3 safest cities in the world.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about coming to Melbourne?
I would recommend for a European student to choose Australia. I find Australia affordable and a great cultural experience. After living in Melbourne I feel stronger and my experience here has changed my life. It has helped me to be more open minded.

Accommodation
Homestay
The benefit of homestay is through cultural exchange and the need to constantly practise English with native speakers. Students learn about Australian culture by immersing themselves in it, experience new food, activities, and attitudes, but they are also encouraged to practise English.
Homestay includes accommodation and food. Breakfast and dinner are supplied on weekdays, with three meals per day on weekends.
Shared Accommodation
This is a situation where students stay in a house with other people. In most situations housemates become friends and is a valuable learning experience for all.
This situation is difficult to organise in advance because it requires the student to meet the other people in the house before they make their decision. The price students pay per week is dependent upon the area and quality of housing, however the general price range is between $80-$200 per week.
Students normally move to this style of accommodation only after living in Melbourne for a few months. This tends to be easier after meeting other people from the college and outside.
Backpackers
Motivating factors in staying in backpacker style accommodation are convenience and location. Students can find this type of accommodation quickly and easily and pay around $30 to $60 per night. Students will find backpackers in many locations and this form of accommodation enables students to live a lifestyle of choice.
Backpackers are found only minutes from GEOS Melbourne College of English.
Employment Programs
The GEOS Employment Program helps students who are looking for paid work, work experience and internships during their time in Melbourne. We hold regular Employment Seminars and Workshops, where students are given advice on job-seeking, visa conditions and resume writing. There is a full time employment advisor on staff and regularly updated job noticeboards throughout the college.
GEOS Melbourne can also find Internship and Work Experience placements for interested students. These positions are usually unpaid but provide an excellent opportunity to gain international, professional experience. Students have been successfully placed in areas such as Construction Management, Graphic Design, Aged Care and Child Care.
Health Matters
It is highly recommended that you take out health insurance before coming to Australia. The insurance policy you choose depends on the visa you hold.
Student visa holders are required to take out compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). This is inexpensive and will provide quality health insurance.
It will help you pay for the medical and hospital care you may need while studying in Australia and will contribute towards the cost of most prescription medicines and emergency ambulance transport.
You can organise this insurance before your arrival by joining here, or paying GEOS Melbourne directly. For more information about OSHC visit this website.
Working Holiday, and tourist visa holders are not required by law to have health insurance. However, it is highly recommended that they take out their own travel health insurance.
People without health insurance who require medical attention must pay full fees for this service. These fees can be expensive.
